How to translate a Shopify store

A practical walkthrough of translating a Shopify store: markets, domains, content types, SEO fields and keeping translations current.

Translating a Shopify store is less about the translation itself and more about coverage and maintenance. This guide walks through the order of work that keeps a second language useful six months after launch.

1. Decide markets before languages

A language without a market behind it creates traffic you cannot serve. Start from where you already ship profitably, then confirm pricing, duties and delivery promises for that region in Shopify Markets.

Once the market exists, add the language to it. Shopify then exposes translation slots for each content type, which is what a translation app writes into.

2. Map every content type you need

Product titles and descriptions are the obvious ones. The parts that get missed are the ones shoppers meet at the moment of doubt.

  • Products, variants and collections
  • Pages, blogs and articles
  • Theme content: buttons, labels, empty states
  • Navigation menus and footer links
  • Notification emails and order status text
  • Refund, shipping and privacy policies
  • Metaobjects used for content blocks
  • SEO titles, meta descriptions and handles

3. Set terminology before bulk translating

Fix the words that must never change: brand names, product line names, material names, size systems. A glossary applied up front is far cheaper than correcting 4,000 product pages afterwards.

Do the same for tone. A concise, warm brand in English should not become formal and verbose in German by accident.

4. Translate in bulk, review by traffic

Translate everything, then review by value: homepage, top 20 products, checkout-adjacent content and policies get human eyes. Long-tail products can go live on the AI output and be improved as they earn traffic.

5. Plan for maintenance from day one

Catalogues change weekly. Without automatic syncing, translated stores drift until the second language quietly becomes wrong. Auto-sync detects changed source content, flags the translation as outdated, and can regenerate it before anyone notices.

Takeaway

Coverage plus maintenance beats a perfect first translation. Set your glossary, translate everything, review by traffic and automate the upkeep.
